European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has said the EU will ask for another 100 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine against coronavirus. So far, this is the only vaccine available in the EU, and the agreement between the manufacturer and the EC provided for an initial delivery of 200 million doses, with the possibility of ordering another 100 million.
The European Medicines Agency recently announced that an evaluation of the Moderna vaccine is expected in the first week of January. The EC has reached an agreement with this manufacturer for 80 million doses, with the possibility to request as much next year.
The Commission also has framework agreements for the supply of vaccines to Astra Zeneca, Sanofi, Jansen, Kurvak and Novavax, when approved, for a total of about two billion doses.
